Transformation of Appearance and Exposure of the Female Body: The Glow Up Challenge on the Social Network TikTok

The practice of sharing images that reveal aesthetic transformations is widespread in traditional media, such as magazines and television, and has also intensified significantly on social media. Historically, the female body has often been portrayed as an object that must conform to a beauty ideal. A contemporary phenomenon that illustrates this is the “Glow Up Challenge”, which has gained popularity on social media and involves mainly women showcasing significant changes to their appearance. This movement is associated with the valorization of image and socially established beauty standards. This paper aims to analyze how the glow up challenge contributes to the intensification and legitimization of aesthetic standards of beaty based, on the analysis of nine selected videos from the hashtag #glowupchallenge on TikTok. The research is situated in the field of Cultural Semiotics, which enables us to understand the processes of signification from thecultural axes of the semiosphere itself. We started by using various methodolgies in conjunction with digital ethnography.
