SUMMARY:

Based on the hypothesis that political gender-based violence is also present in media discourse and on radio stations in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, this research analyzes how commercial stations 96FM and 98FM construct the image of the current governor of Rio Grande do Norte (2019-2022 and 2023 to the present), Fátima Bezerra, a left-wing, openly brown woman of working-class origin and LGBTQIAPN+. The overall objective was to analyze journalistic discourse, through the programs Jornal das 6 and Repórter 98, on FM radio stations in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, regarding the governor's political activities. The specific objectives were: to investigate the relationship between the broadcasters' profile and the image they construct of the governor; to compare the approach to Fátima Bezerra during different periods of her administration; and to analyze national media discourse on women in politics. Based on the theoretical and methodological foundation of French discourse analysis, the data were analyzed using Charaudeau's (2004) classifications of discursive targets; Orlandi's (2009) interpretation device to demonstrate the workings of ideology; and Pêcheux's (1997) concept of imaginary formations and informational schema. The study concluded that women in decision-making and power positions, especially in politics, are systematically questioned about their capacity and competence. In the case of Governor Fátima Bezerra, there are elements in her speeches—verbal attacks, attempts to link her image and actions to elements commonly associated with the male world, "forgetting" about her political career, and repeated assertions that the space she occupies does not belong to her—that reinforce the hypothesis that she is the target of political gender-based violence.
