In the Name of Faith and the Woman's via crucis: A Critical Discoursive Analysis of Silas Malafaia's posts on Twitter/X

Discourses are apparatuses for the permanence of the patriarchal system, including in some discourses within the evangelical Christian universe, which rely on rhetoric that arouses fear of sin, hell, and notions of polarization between Us and Them (van Dijk, 2015, p. 248). Social networks are an indispensable means of communication in Brazilian reality today, they are part of who we are and what we build as a society. There are many profiles of evangelical men on social networks, who, we suspect, intend to keep men in their controlling position, disregarding the important role played daily by women in the multiple journeys they face. Regardless of the Christian denomination, the implicit commitment already present in their doctrines is entangled in a truth defended and sustained through the Bible and reflections expressed by their leaders. In view of this, the current stance of some leaders demonstrates controversies that need to be observed, as they involve and influence thousands of people. This work proposes to use Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as a theoretical-methodological approach, referring to concepts such as manipulation, seeking to investigate the maintenance of the domination of machismo that we address in this work. The object to be analyzed is the discursive manifestations and statements of Silas Malafaia on topics related to women, machismo, and misogyny on the X Platform (Twitter). The observation of this communicative process aims to analyze whether the discourses produced by the religious leader violate and/or attack human and/or social rights. This research proposal aims to analyze the discursive strategy on the part of the evangelical leader (Silas Malafaia) on social networks, particularly on the X Platform (Twitter), in relation to issues related to minorities in Brazilian society. We will seek to investigate whether his discourse is used as a tool to foster followers and feed the public discourse of religion on the part of the pastor; as well as we intend to describe the use of elements of discursive abuse of power by the leader, notably, machismo, racism, and LGBTFobia; and also to contribute to the public debate in order to establish practices to confront discursive violence in the context of religion and social networks. Masked violence contributes to the maintenance of a system of control, patriarchy: responsible for the oppression and violence against women. Therefore, it becomes essential to read themes of Critical Discourse Analysis, Resende and Ramalho (2019); Discourse and Manipulation, van Dijk (2015); patriarchy, Santos (2018), Alvaro & Araujo (2021), Rezende (2015), Oyěwumi (2004) and Saffioti (1987); biopower, Foucault (2009) and Mbembe (2018); and about Silas Malafaia, Koren (2016), Amorim (2017), Melo (2011). The choice of Critical Discourse Analysis as a theoretical-methodological perspective, as shown by Magalhaes, Martins and Resende (2017), helps us to debate issues of contemporary social life such as sexism, control and institutional manipulation. It is worth noting that the data collection of the research as well as the images were carried out before the suspension of the X social network in Brazil.
