ECONOMIC DYNAMICS AND LABOR MARKET IN NORTHEASTERN METROPOLITAN REGIONS, 2012–2024: An Analysis of Knowledge-Intensive Services
Metropolitan Regions; Labor Market; Knowledge-Intensive Services; Northeast Brazil.
The occupation of Brazilian territory has historically been concentrated along the coast, while industrialization has intensified regional inequalities. Concurrently, rapid urbanization has reshaped the urban structure and labor market in metropolitan areas. This study examines how economic and labor transformations between 2012 and 2024 influenced the development of northeastern metropolitan regions. It is based on the hypothesis that, although processes such as regionais productive deconcentration, deindustrialization, and economic reprimarization have challenged the centrality of metropolitan areas in national economic circuits, these spaces continue to retain factors that sustain their polarization capacity. The analysis relies on secondary data, focusing on the metropolitan regions of Recife, Salvador, Fortaleza, Natal, and João Pessoa, and classifying Knowledge-Intensive Services according to Eurostat criteria. Findings indicate that the metropolitan tertiary sector continues to perform complex, knowledge-intensive functions, while coexisting with high levels of informality and labor precarization. Additionally, results reveal structural inequalities between northeastern metropolitan regions and the national context, highlighting the need for public policies with a territorial focus. Overall, the study underscores the persistent challenges to national integration amid deindustrialization, economic reprimarization, and ongoing shifts in the global labor market and technoproductive paradigms.
