THE STRUGGLE OF PUBLIC MARKET WORKERS AGAINST THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE REDINHA TOURIST COMPLEX, NATAL/RN
Modernization; Tourism; Workers; Resistance; Redinha Tourist Complex, Natal/RN
Modernization projects in urban spaces designated for tourism tend to lead to gentrification, exclusion, and dispossession, affecting local communities and workers. In this context, we focus on the Redinha Tourist Complex project, implemented by the Natal City Hall between 2023 and 2025. The project modernized the former Redinha Public Market, altering its rules of use, workspace, and workers' daily lives. Thus, our overall objective is to analyze the dynamics of resistance and the struggle strategies of the workers of the former Redinha Public Market in response to the implementation of the Redinha Tourist Complex project by the Natal City Hall (2023-2025), observing the material and symbolic losses and gains. Our specific objectives are: a) To investigate the participation of workers from the former Redinha Public Market in the development of the Redinha Tourist Complex project, the forms of inclusion (or exclusion) in the planning stages, the consultation and dialogue mechanisms established by the government, and the expectations and perceptions of these workers regarding the transformations resulting from the intervention; b) To examine the forms of organization and the struggle of these workers in defending their interests and rights through interventions in their workplaces and the reproduction of their ways of life; c) To identify the repercussions of the modernization of the former Redinha Market on the quality of life, working conditions, and daily lives of these workers. This descriptive-explanatory research will adopt a qualitative approach, involving semi-structured interviews with workers from the Redinha Public Market and public officials from the Natal City Hall. Additionally, non-participant observation will be conducted in the field. The information collected will be analyzed based on four categories of analysis: 1. Dynamics of Resistance; 2. Rights and Working Conditions; 3. Quality of life and daily routine of workers; 4. Participation in the management of the Public Market.
