SUMMARY:

This research aims to analyze the role of railway heritage as an agent of historical and cultural appreciation and as a driver of tourism practices within the urban context of Natal. The railway, as a symbol of industrial development and modernization in Brazil, has left a tangible and intangible legacy that often remains underutilized or neglected. In this regard, this investigation seeks to understand how railway assets can be integrated into cultural tourism strategies, fostering collective memory and strengthening local identity. The theoretical approach brings together concepts of collective memory, cultural heritage, and cultural tourism, with a particular focus on industrial and railway heritage. The methodology adopted is qualitative, descriptive, and interpretive, following a case study strategy. The procedures include a literature review, mapping of railway assets in Rio Grande do Norte, document analysis, and semi-structured interviews with actors linked to the railway and tourism. This study is expected to contribute to the reflection on the importance of railway memory as a living heritage, capable of generating meaning, promoting heritage education, and boosting local tourism. The research also seeks to highlight gaps in the management of this heritage in the state, proposing pathways for its better appreciation and integration into public policies on culture and tourism.
