SUMMARY:

The responsible tourism (RT) movement emerges as an alternative to mass tourism, advocating for the necessity of taking responsibility for the negative impacts caused by the activity. This approach involves collaboration between the government, tourism trade companies, tourists, and residents. However, the discussion about gender and the importance of women empowerment in the workplace are themes that have received little attention within the concept of responsible tourism. When focusing on shellfish-gathering women, there is a lack of visibility for this group in their struggle for recognition and appreciation of their work, culture, and way of life. Tourism presents one of the alternatives to strengthen these women's empowerment. In this context, the case of Instituto Negralinda stands out, as it has been promoting new opportunities for shellfish-gathering women in the areas of mangrove gastronomy, community-based tourism, and entrepreneurship on the coast of Pernambuco. From this perspective, this research aims to answer the following problem question: How can the process of empowering shellfish-gathering women, based on the case of Instituto Negralinda on the coast of Pernambuco, contribute to the consolidation of responsible tourism in the state? The general objective is to understand how the process of empowering shellfish-gathering women, based on the case of Instituto Negralinda on the coast of Pernambuco, can contribute to the consolidation of responsible tourism in the state. The specific objectives are to: describe the daily practices of the shellfish gatherers; reveal the impact of the Institute's work on the engagement and empowerment of these women; and characterize the consolidation of responsible tourism from the perspective of SDG 5 (Gender Equality). The thesis argues that the practice of responsible tourism in traditional communities promotes the empowerment of shellfish-gathering women across multiple dimensions (economic, social, political, psychological, and cultural), contributing to the achievement of the premises of SDG 5. Methodologically, the research adopts a qualitative approach, based on the feminist phenomenology paradigm, to understand the lived experience of the participants from a gender-sensitive perspective. To compose the theoretical framework, a systematic literature review was conducted using the PRISMA protocol and the Iramuteq software for content systematization. Data collection will involve document analysis of public policies and reports, participant observation in the daily activities of the shellfish gatherers, and in-depth interviews with the women and other relevant local tourism stakeholders. The collected data will be interpreted through thematic analysis. Therefore, this study makes a significant contribution by shedding light on the topic of female empowerment through the lens of responsible tourism development.
