PAGES: 76
BIG AREA: Ciências Sociais Aplicadas
AREA: Turismo
SUMMARY:
In the tourism job market is characterised by gender pay disparities, with women receive the lowest remuneration and are overrepresented in the lowest-paid roles. Another point to consider is that in contemporary society, it’s still common for women to be responsible for most household chores and family care. As a Strong economic and employment sector, tourism plays a major role in the communities where it operates, and Natal/RN is one of Brazil’s leading destinations within this market. Considering the current reality of women, this project aims to analyse how women working in the hotel sector perceive, appropriate and experience leisure, in the contexto of gender and labour inequalities, taking into account the social, cultural and labour factors of female workers in Rio Grande do Norte. The project seeks to: a) to portray women’s daily lives focusing on their professional and domestics activities; b) to characterise how the target group appropriates and experience leisure; c) to identify the socia, cultural, labour-related, and Family factors that influence access to leisure; and d) to present a conceptual proposal of leisure that reflects the experiences of women working in the hotel industry. Methodology: The proposed objective will be pursued through an exploratory and descriptive field study, with a qualitative-quantitative approach to the data collected. To gain a broader understanding of women’s experiences in different contexts, interviews will be conducted with women from Natal/RN working in the hotel industry at various hierarchical levels. Bardin’s content analysis (1979) will be applied to the data, supported by the IRAMUTEQ Software to categorise, code, and organise the information. Expected results: Considering the objective of this study, it’s expected that the research will shed light on issues related to women’s leisure, particularly their perceptions, appropriation and daily leisure experiences. It will also explore how women balance work, time, and leisure, as well as how they manage the divisions and responsibilities in their daily lives.
