SUMMARY:

Mate choice is an evolutionary force that spans across different species. Among humans, various factors influence established relationship patterns, such as reproductive strategies and individual differences. Sexual interactions can expose individuals to risks, such as physical assault and sexually transmitted infections, affecting their physical integrity and physiological health. This study aimed to analyze how self-esteem, personality traits, experiences of abuse and neglect during childhood, pornography consumption, and sexual orientation may be related to the expression of Risky Sexual Behavior (RSB). A total of 768 volunteers participated in the study, of whom 556 provided valid responses for analysis, including 283 women and 273 men. Data collection was conducted online and included 14 sociodemographic questions and four validated instruments (Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Reduced Personality Markers and Sexual Risk Survey). The results confirmed previous findings, such as the association between Extraversion and RSB, but no association was observed between self-esteem and this behavior, in contrast to previous studies. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the factors that influence risky sexual behavior and reinforce the importance of prevention strategies and sexual education aimed at diverse populations.
