MAPPING OF KNOWLEDGE GAPS OF INCOMING STAFF AT UFRN.
Knowledge gaps; Informational barriers; Information behavior; Knowledge management; Technical-administrative staff.
The general objective of this study is to analyze the knowledge gaps of newly hired technical- administrative staff holding the position of Administrative Assistant at UFRN, also considering their emotional implications in the process of information appropriation. To achieve this goal, the following specific objectives were outlined: (1) to identify the information needs of incoming staff; (2) to map the main barriers faced in the access, use, and management of personal information; (3) to analyze the emotional dimension associated with the information- seeking process; and (4) to propose knowledge management strategies that foster staff integration and performance. The objectives will be achieved through an applied, exploratory, and descriptive study with a mixed-methods approach. Data collection will be carried out through an online questionnaire administered to newly hired staff from public calls issued between 2019 and 2023, using a voluntary non-probabilistic sample. Quantitative data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data will be submitted to content analysis. The study is expected to reveal which information sources are most frequently used and which represent the greatest difficulties, as well as to shed light on recurring feelings in line with Kuhlthau’s Information Search Process model. As a contribution, the study aims to provide tools to improve knowledge management at UFRN and to highlight the role of newly hired public servants as a central pillar of the institution, promoting better staff adaptation, reducing rework, and enhancing the quality of public services delivered by the university.
