SUMMARY:

The geographical location of Brazil in a tropical zone conditioned some rivers as agents of sediment transport to the continental shelf, and also through the canyons to the abyssal areas. In the Northeast region, it is possible to observe that these underwater canyons may be responsible for the most effective transport of sediments directly to the abyssal zone due to the narrowing of the continental shelf when compared to the southeast region of Brazil. At the mouth of the Jequitinhonha and Pardo river is located the Belmonte underwater canyon, our study area. The main aim of this Thesis is related to the local and regional characteristic of the Belmonte Canyon Submarine System, from the continental shelf to the abyssal plain, which connects with the Pernambuco Channel. Geophysical data were used, including high-resolution chirp, Sparker and Delta Sparker seismic data, as well as single- and multbeambathymetry. The results obtained so far indicate the prolongation of tributary canyons north of Belmonte canyon; whereas the position of its mouth suggests a greater contribution of the water flow further north of the current mouth of the Jequitinhonha River; whereas paleochannels and rocky outcrops are aligned with the same trend in the southeast northwest direction; and that the extension of paleovalley takes place in a well-defined way by the volcanic bank Royal Charlotte. The cross morphometric analysis of the Belmonte Canyon System indicated that it is formed by 3 more tributary canyons probably connected to the Pardo River, and that the predominant pattern of the V-shaped format is characteristic of canyons formed in high-energy environments, generated by river systems, which flow through a resistant rocky base. These studies enabled the automated characterization of the cross-sectional profiles of canyons along the Continental Shelf and it is expected to expand and complement issues related to the transport of sediments and deposits in this area and in other
regions of Brazil and the world.
