SUMMARY:

Stress is one of the most common problems faced by humans, being one of the
factors responsible for changes in health and well-being. Its study has been
dominated by a clinical perspective, as a psychophysiological phenomenon
resulting from the individual’s perception of mismatches between environmental
demands and the individual’s ability to respond. Therefore, a student’s entry into
university can expose them to specific stressors, such as content assessments,
the amount of material to be studied, the demands associated with various
activities, among others. The objective of this study was to investigate the
physiological and emotional responses of first-year students of both sexes in the
Biomedicine and Speech-Language Pathology program at the Federal University
of Rio Grande do Norte during exposure to two types of stressors: a written
assessment and a scavenger hunt (chronic stressors). Systolic and diastolic blood
pressure, heart rate, and state of anxiety (Idate) were assessed before and after
the assessment activities (baseline, pre-test, post-test, and recovery phases). The
dependent variables (systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, and Idate-
state) were analyzed descriptively using parametric and nonparametric tests
according to the distribution of the variables. Significant variation in cardiovascular
variables and students’ emotional responses was found between the experimental
phases, with the highest values observed in the pre-test phase, which preceded
the application of the stressor, returning to baseline values after its
completion. Thus, we can suggest that coping with stressors can lead to internal
changes that aim to adapt the individual to these situations. Furthermore, these
results may support strategies to minimize stress in the academic environment,
promoting health and performance among university students.
