SUMMARY:

Considering the spatial production circuit of cassava highlights one of the most valuable traditions of Brazilian cuisine, with great historical, economic, and social relevance. In 2017, the UN selected cassava as the food of the 21st century. In Brazil, it is registered as an intangible cultural heritage by IPHAN. Initially cultivated by indigenous peoples, it is now produced throughout the country, making Brazil the fourth-largest producer worldwide in 2021. The processing of cassava, initially done rudimentarily in flour houses, now also takes place in automated agro-industries that use cassava starch from the South and Southeast regions. Despite its modest production, Paraíba has a significant tradition in cassava cultivation and processing, currently undergoing changes. In this context, the study aims to analyze the modernization of the spatial production circuit of cassava in Paraíba. The investigation is based on the theory of spatial production circuits, emphasizing the centrality of circulation in the various stages of production, focusing on cassava cultivation. Additionally, the theory of cooperation circles helps recognize the interactions between agents and places in the processes of raw material acquisition, management, production, distribution, and consumption. The analytical category of the used territory considers the space utilized by society, public authorities, institutions, companies, and farmers. The study highlights modernization as a heterogeneous, complex, and comprehensive process involving different technical levels and combining changes and continuities, starting in the second half of the 20th century and driven by the technical-scientific-informational environment. The research methodology comprises three stages: bibliographic research, involving the review of key concepts in books and scientific articles; statistical data and document research, including data collection from IBGE and other institutions on national and state agricultural activity; and field research, consisting of technical visits to rural properties, flour houses, and starch agro-industries in 13 municipalities in Paraíba, with observations of production processes, photographic records, and interviews with responsible individuals and workers. Cassava culture has great potential as a source of food, income, and economic development for Paraíba. However, its cultivation has stagnated in recent decades, contrasting with the increased entry of cassava starch and the exit of tapioca starch to other states. In the technical-scientific-informational period, the techniques used in Paraíba's flour houses are a hybrid of new and inherited elements, characterized by traditionalism, resistance, and varying levels of modernization. Agro-industries represent the modernization of the tapioca starch production process, introducing modern technical objects and establishing new solidarity relationships and material and immaterial flows between distant subspaces of the state territory. These new dynamics highlight the need for public policies that support the modernization and regulation of flour houses, ensuring that small producers have access to new markets and guaranteeing benefits for all those involved in the spatial production circuit of cassava in Paraíba.
