SUMMARY:

The general aim of this thesis is to analyze the dynamics of agricultural land use in Brazil and the Semiarid region, seeking to understand the socio-spatial factors that characterize and contribute to the poverty situation of the majority of family farmers at the beginning of the 21st century. For this purpose, we mobilize the concept of “geographic space” and the category “territory used”, having as our main reference the work of Professor Milton Santos. Furthermore, still based on this author and the international approach of “sustainable livelihood assets”, we argue that poverty in family farming, in the country and in the Semiarid region, can be understood as a “productive non-citizenship” that materializes in “multiple asset shortages”. The construction of the arguments presented and the analyses developed were based on bibliographic research and the systematization of official statistical data from several IBGE databases, especially the 2017 Agricultural Census. The initial results of the study highlight that the agricultural use of the territory in Brazil is permeated by contradictions and privileges given to economic sectors linked to the production of commodities, but family farming remains an important social group in food production. However, the segment is heterogeneous and marked by socio-spatial inequalities. Among the determinants of this process, the role of the State stands out, which has directed rural credit policy to strengthen the most capitalized sectors in the countryside.
