SUMMARY:
Soil is often a recipient of accumulated contamination from industrial, agricultural, urban and maritime activities. In this context, technologies and strategies have been developed for soil remediation and attracted a growing interest among scientists and the industrial sector. Electrokinetic Remediation (ER) has been widely used to treat soils contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides, dyes, petroleum, diesel, among others. This technology features ex situ or in situ flexibility, applicability in low permeability soils and low operating cost. However, traditional RE has difficulty in treating soils contaminated with highly hydrophobic organic compounds. In order to overcome this limitation, the remediation process of these compounds by the electrokinetic method has been combined with other treatment processes. This thesis aimed to investigate, develop and evaluate the enhancement and coupling of RE with the use of surfactants and also with permeable reactive barriers (BRPs), using raw cork and cork supported with zero-valent iron (ZVI) in the treatment of soils contaminated with diesel and with phenanthrene. The RE-surfactant combination, for soil contaminated with 10,000 mg kg-1 of diesel after 14 days of remeasurement, achieved a removal of total petroleum hydrocarbons (HTP) of 46.25% using SDS, a removal superior to those obtained in studies in the literature employing electrokinetic treatment with the same contaminant concentration and number of
days of remediation. The RE-BRP integration showed removals of 46.17 and 55.63% of phenanthrene, with a barrier formed by raw cork and cork supported with ZVI, respectively, demonstrating potential and innovative application of these materials as BRPs coupled with electrokinetic treatments.
