SUMMARY:
Soil is often a recipient of accumulated contamination from industrial, agricultural, urban and maritime activities. In this context, technologies and strategies have been developed for soil remediation and attracted a growing interest among scientists and the industrial sector. Electrokinetic Remediation (ER) has been widely used to treat soils contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides, dyes, petroleum, diesel, among others. The removal of contaminants from soil by RE is based on the application of a low intensity electric field, using electrodes inserted and properly distributed directly on the soil subsurface or immersed in an electrolyte solution in contact with the matrix. ER features ex situ or in situ flexibility; applicability in soils with low permeability and low operating cost. However, traditional ER has difficulty in treating soils contaminated with highly hydrophobic organic compounds. In order to overcome this limitation, the remediation process of these compounds by the electrokinetic method has been combined with other treatment processes. This thesis aimed to investigate, develop and evaluate the improvement and coupling of ER with the use of solubilizing agents (surfactants) and also with BRPs, using raw cork and cork supported with ZVI in the treatment of soils contaminated with diesel and phenanthrene. The results of the ER-surfactants combination, for soil contaminated with 10000 mg kg-1 of diesel after 14 days of remediation, showed removal of HTP higher than those obtained in studies in the literature using electrokinetic treatment. PRB formed by raw cork increased the efficiency of phenanthrene removal by the electrokinetic process by 5%, while cork supported with ZVI increased the efficiency of this same process by 14%.
