SUMMARY:

This dissertation examines the Brado Conservador newspaper, published in the town of Açu, in the province of Rio Grande do Norte, between 1876 and 1880. The research analyzes how the periodical was organized and how it positioned itself within the political fragmentation of the Conservative Party and the great drought of 1877. It seeks to understand its role as an instrument of partisan dispute, as an articulator of sociability networks, and as a producer of representations of the nineteenth-century sertão of Rio Grande do Norte. The study considers the Brado Conservador not merely as an informational medium but as a political actor actively engaged in constructing discourses and confronting rival newspapers such as the Correio do Assú and the Jornal do Açu. To this end, the work employs Roger Chartier’s (1990) concept of representations and adopts Carlo Ginzburg’s evidential method, identifying—through traces and clues found in the analyzed issues—the sociability networks and collaborators that supported the newspaper and its political alliances. The investigation demonstrates that the drought of 1877, beyond being a natural phenomenon, was transformed into a political and rhetorical discourse, serving as a strategy of accusation, defense, and legitimation within local disputes. In this sense, the Brado Conservador emerges as a privileged source for understanding the political and social dynamics of Açu in the nineteenth century, revealing how the regional press contributed to shaping collective representations of the sertão, the drought, and political life in Imperial Brazil. Thus, the dissertation is situated within the fields of História dos Sertões (History of the Hinterlands) and Cultural History, engaging in dialogue with studies on the press, politics, and representations in nineteenth-century Brazil.
