YOUTH IN STRUGGLE IN THE BACKLANDS: THE UBIRATAN CORTÊZ COSTA ARCHIVE AND THE MILITARY DICTATORSHIP IN CATOLÉ DO ROCHA-PB
Memories of youth; Personal archive; Military dictatorship; Sertões; Catolé do Rocha-PB.
The research addresses the Brazilian Military Dictatorship (1964-1985) and its echoes in the backcountry of Paraíba, based on the experience and memories of Ubiratan Cortez Costa, from Catolé do Rocha, Paraíba. The aim is to understand not only the formation of groups that opposed the dictatorship but also how the hinterland of Paraíba became a significant space for the construction of collective identities, resistance, and struggle, especially among the youth. Theoretically and methodologically, the research combines the concept of memory, mobilized through Ubiratan's "personal archive" and other documentary typologies (oral history, audiovisual materials, and specific excerpts from personal documents such as letters and personal records), seeking to understand how the trajectory of this individual intersects with a deeper exploration of self-writing and the involvement of young people from the hinterlands in the challenges, limits, and utopias of life during times of exception.
