SANCTITY AS AN ARCHETYPE: BENIGNA CARDOSO AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF A FEMININE MODEL TO BE FOLLOWED
Benigna Cardoso; Popular Sanctity; Archetype; Diocese of Crato;
Benigna Cardoso da Silva was murdered at the age of 13 on October 24, 1941, in the city of Santana do Cariri. This event marked the beginning of her popular holiness, which grew around her tomb, fueled by her life stories and subsequent martyrdom narratives. However, in the 21st century, the Catholic Church began to formulate attempts to formalize the popular devotion that was growing in the Cariri region of Ceará, achieving success with the official beatification in 2022. Thus, we consolidate this work based on the following objective: the research that was developed based on the construction of the model of holiness and femininity based on the blessed woman from Ceará, which has been reflected in the idea of youth that the Catholic Church has propagated, more specifically through the work of the Diocese of Crato, a Catholic territorial unit that encompasses the Cariri region of Ceará, which uses the young woman's martyrdom to influence young people to imitate her. For the methodological basis of this research, we use concepts such as archetype, popular sanctity, and the backlands—the latter being included here—to understand space as one of the important elements in the formation of this belief. We also prepared a biographical review of Benigna and the miracle workers of the Brazilian backlands, especially those of the Cariri region of Ceará, to reflect on the popular reasons that sanctify the dead. To this end, we developed the dissertation through an analysis of the social media accounts of the Diocese and the young blessed, namely, Facebook and Instagram, where we examined all the material made available by the Catholic Church from 2014, the year these cyberspaces were created, to 2022, the year of the official beatification of the "little saint of the people," thus consolidating our time frame. The young woman's 3 beatification livestream, available on the Diocese's YouTube channel, is also relevant to the dissertation.
