Seridó, livestock, drought, survival, economy.
This dissertation constitutes research on the handling of cattle from 1875 to 1885, set in the Sertão da Ribeira Seridó. Our research aims to understand how the Great Drought (1877) may have influenced the backcountry economy, as cattle ranching was the main source of income for the province of Rio Grande do Norte, concerning the maintenance exercised by politics, landowners, and cowhands. The intention is to understand how agents interfered in the context of the cattle cycle within the backcountry region and how this affected the ways of life in everyday life and the local economy. To this end, written sources such as public records (crimes and guardianship properties) as well as the Reports of the Province Presidents will be analyzed, which align us to a social and political perspective, starting from an economic look at the region.
