THE SERIDÓ SERTÃO IN DISPUTE: THE INFLUENCE OF JOSÉ BERNARDO DE MEDEIROS’ FAMILY
ORGANIZATION (1889–1900)
“José Bernardo de Medeiros”; Family organization; “sertão”.
This research analyzes the political-family group led by patriarch José Bernardo de Medeiros
between 1889 and 1900, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, within the context of the transition
from Empire to Republic, focusing geographically on the backlands region of Seridó. The study
examines the political landscape of electoral disputes in the region, promoted by this leader, as
well as the characteristics of the Seridó family organization during the Republican period.
Grounded in the New Political History, the research discusses the concepts of political power,
family organization, and political culture, using hemerographic sources and judicial records
from the Caicó District Court as its main sources. In this way, the study seeks to understand the
political power of the Bezerra de Medeiros family, the fraud and manipulation of elections, and
to analyze the alliances and electoral conflicts that took place during the early years of the
Republican regime.
