SUMMARY:

This research investigates the experiences of the English traveler Henry Koster based on his
travels through the sertão of the captaincies of Rio Grande do Norte and Pernambuco in the
19th century between 1809 and 1818. Problematizing the concepts of backlands and
historical experience through the writing of the wanderer, our analyses will be developed
based on bibliographical sources such as the version entitled “Viagens ao nordeste do
Brasil” (Koster, 1942), the book “Corografia Brasílica ou Relação Histórico-Geográfica do
Reino Brasil” (Casal, 1817) and the work “Atlas do Império do Brazil” (Almeida, 1868).
With this, it is necessary to analyze the personal trajectories, interests and choices of the
historical subject through the methodological paths constructed by micro-history. Koster's
work, as part of the genre of travel literature, becomes a fundamental piece in our research
for examining the traveler's movements, spatial and social descriptions of the backlands,
Koster's experiences as a sugar mill owner, his perspectives of otherness regarding the
populations he knew, and how these issues were essential for the conceptions that the traveler
created regarding the concept of backlands. In our heuristic processes, we believe it is of
great importance to work with the conceptions of those who experienced the sertão through
writing, narrative, and physical and social crossings. Thus, we aim to contribute to the study
of personal trajectories in the processes of crossings, and the analyses that flow through the
lines they write and the voices that narrate the history of the sertão.
