The uncontrolled growth of urban areas, the consequent problems arising from contamination of public drinking water sources, the concern of people with a healthier life by consuming less calorie products and more natural led to changes in habits that resulted in a significant and increasing consumption of bottled water around the world. However, in recent decades, many studies began to find cases of contamination of bottled mineral water for coliform and other bacteria, and changes in physical-chemical properties, resulting in noncompliance with the standards of potability and recommendations of oversight bodies, endangering the health of consumers. In this issue, the aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of natural mineral water bottled in 20-liter containers, offered by retailers to the population of Natal, RN, Brazil. 64 random samples were taken by stratification in the four administrative regions of the city, considering the official list of sales points and contamination levels for total coliforms found in the pilot sample. The most significant results found contamination by coliforms totals 32.81% (± 11.8%) of bottles of natural mineral water 20L sold at retail in Natal city. Applied statistical tests, were found no correlation between the contamination Total Coliforms and distance between commercially and industry; time of filling; bootles age; municipal administrative region and storage mode. With the above, is expected to contribute to issues such as improving the observation of legislation by producers, distributors and mineral traders bottled and mainly understand what factors may be affecting its quality during the chain of production and distribution, contributing for future research, for better awareness of consumers with regard to products as well as for a more effective performance of the inspection and control bodies.
