SUMMARY:

The increasing volume of textile waste generated by the industry, combined with the demand for more sustainable materials in the construction sector, has encouraged the development of alternatives that promote waste reuse and reduce environmental impacts. In this context, polymer composites reinforced with natural fibers have emerged as a promising solution due to their potential to combine functional performance, sustainability, and waste valorization. Therefore, this study aimed to develop sustainable polymer composite panels reinforced with cotton textile waste and incorporated with a flame-retardant system, manufactured by compression molding, for potential application in non-structural building components. The panels were produced using polyester resin as the polymer matrix, cotton textile waste as the reinforcing material, and a flame-retardant system based on decabromodiphenyl ether and antimony trioxide. The composites were characterized through tensile and three-point bending tests to evaluate their mechanical properties, thermal conductivity measurements to assess thermal performance, and the UL 94 Vertical flammability test to determine their fire behavior. The results showed that the incorporation of cotton textile waste affected the mechanical properties of the composites while maintaining performance compatible with non-structural applications. Regarding thermal performance, all formulations exhibited low thermal conductivity values, indicating their potential as thermal insulating materials. Concerning fire behavior, the incorporation of the flame-retardant system enabled the formulations containing the additive to achieve the V-0 classification in the UL 94 Vertical test, demonstrating high efficiency in reducing flame propagation. Overall, the developed composite proved to be technically viable for use in non-structural applications such as partition panels, wall panels, and interior cladding, while contributing to textile waste valorization and the development of more sustainable materials for the construction industry.
