SUMMARY:

The expansion of offshore wind energy has driven the development of large-scale wind turbines characterized by increased rated power, larger rotor diameters, and higher energy generation capacity. This study aims to comparatively analyze the performance of three offshore wind turbine models –DTU 10 MW, IEA 15 MW, and IEA 22 MW under the wind conditions of the coast of Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil. Initially, a theoretical review was conducted on the evolution of offshore wind energy, covering offshore wind resources, offshore wind turbine technology, and the main turbine components. Subsequently, based on the technical specifications of the three turbine models, key parameters were compared, including rated power, rotor diameter, hub height, swept area, power coefficient, and component reliability. Computational simulations were then performed using the QBlade software, applying the Blade Element Momentum (BEM) theory to evaluate the aerodynamic performance of the DTU 10 MW, IEA 15 MW, and IEA 22 MW turbines operating under an offshore wind speed of 10 m/s. The simulations enabled the assessment of aerodynamic parameters such as lift and drag coefficients, rotor torque, power coefficient, thrust coefficient, and power output. The adopted methodology was based on a literature review, documentary analysis, and computational simulation. The results demonstrate the technological evolution of offshore wind turbines, driven by increases in rotor dimensions and installed capacity, as well as the influence of these factors on energy performance. The QBlade simulations complemented the comparative analysis by illustrating the aerodynamic behavior of each turbine model and providing a better understanding of their operational performance. The preliminary results indicate that large-scale offshore wind turbines offer greater electricity generation potential under the wind regime characteristics of the coast of Rio Grande do Norte, highlighting their suitability for future offshore wind developments in the region.
