SUMMARY:

This thesis is situated within the field of architectural theory and history, focusing on the theoretical production of the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies (IAUS or Institute), particularly the propositions for post-1960s architecture published in the journal Oppositions (1973-1984) in New York, United States. The IAUS was a non-governmental organization founded by architect Peter Eisenman, dedicated to education, research, exhibitions, publications, and professional practice. Operating in New York City (USA) between 1967 and 1985, the Institute developed a series of critical and propositional stances regarding the approaches present in the field of American post-war architecture and urbanism. Thus, the main objective of this thesis is to analyze the theoretical contribution of the IAUS to architectural culture based on the theoretical and practical propositions of the journal Oppositions. Consequently, this work is divided into six parts: (1) the Introduction presents a brief overview of how the IAUS is addressed in academic literature, offering a literature review to map how the Institute is perceived in scholarly work. Chapter (2) outlines the main discussions in the field of architecture and urbanism in which the IAUS was embedded at the time of its formation. Chapters (3) and (4) emphasize the IAUS as an institution and cultural center, examining its formation process from CASE (Conference of Architects for the Study of the Environment), its founding, main projects, areas of activity, exhibitions, and editorial publications. Chapter (5) highlights the content analysis of 23 editions of the journal Oppositions and discusses the propositional approaches to architectural theory.
