SUMMARY:

The doctoral thesis titled “DESENHOJE: guidelines for teaching freehand drawing in Architecture and Urbanism courses and the various emphases in Design” investigates the relevance, challenges, and urgency of realigning the teaching of analog graphical representation in the 21st century. Situated in a technology-mediated context, the research approaches freehand drawing not merely as an artistic or purely aesthetic end, but as the fundamental cognitive and motor instrument through which designers elaborate forms, understand proportions, and translate abstract thoughts into two-dimensional visualizations. The central problem is structured around three main axes that threaten the permanence of sketching in the aforementioned undergraduate programs. First, the technological axis, marked by the premature migration of students to digital platforms. Second, the behavioral and psychological axis, revealing a generation of students hyper-stimulated by screens, who suffer from immediacy, paralysis in the face of mistakes and the blank page, and who strongly believe in the “myth of innate talent”. The third axis focuses on the faculty and the curricular structure, evidencing overloaded curricula, a scarcity of allocated time for manual practice, and a lack of specific pedagogical preparation among teachers to mediate learning for the current generation. Faced with these challenges, the main objective of this thesis consists of formulating pedagogical and curricular guidelines for teaching freehand drawing in Architecture and Urbanism courses and the various Design emphases, aiming to enhance its relevance as a cognitive ideation tool during the learning process in these respective programs. Methodologically, a collaborative approach based on action research was adopted. To this end, theoretical and documentary data (syllabi and Pedagogical Course Projects - PPCs) were gathered from public undergraduate programs across Brazil. Subsequently, a collaborative network was established with authors, teachers, and students in order to map the anxieties and lived experiences within the classroom. The results confirmed the diagnosis of the suppression of manual practice and the insecurity among both teachers and students. However, they also revealed promising paths derived from the analysis of reports and observations. From these insights, it was possible to develop ten curricular and pedagogical guidelines, structuring a pathway to rescue not only freehand drawing but also the confidence of creative professionals in Architecture and Design.
