  • This research aimed to analyze reading practices related to the fair almanac O Nordeste Brasileiro, in the city of Ibiara, backlands of Paraíba, in the period between 1967 and 1980. O Nordeste Brasileiro is an annual leaflet assembled with predictions for winter, indications for plantations and medicinal herbs, prognoses involving Astrology, horoscopes, advertisements, calendar, circulating between the 1940s and the beginning of the 21st century in the Northeast of Brazil. Ibiara was the sales stage for this leaflet and for readers and readings about time and destiny in the backlands. Understanding this hinterland as a space for the construction of narratives and with unique cultural manifestations that characterize the life of Ibiara. The readings done in the Sertão(s) represent a way of life and define how subjects understand and deal with the Universe. By analyzing the structure and content of this leaflet, it was possible to identify the plots involved in the preparation process and how each detail particularizes this almanac. Having as its author Manoel Luiz dos Santos from Pernambuco, this character was also identified as a prophet of the sertão. The theoretical concepts covered are based on the writings of Roger Chartier (1999), understanding the book as a social and cultural production, as well as understanding the fair almanac as an element of Cordel Literature, given its format, the ways of production, editing, dissemination, circulation spaces and its readership (ALMEIDA, 2019)

  • This work analyzes the representations of the Jurema Sagrada at the Seridó Potiguar from the cinematographic work Boi de Prata (1981), by Carlos Augusto Ribeiro Júnior. The feature film that was filmed in Caicó/RN in the late 1970s, still under the Brazilian Civil-Military Dictatorship, was shelved for decades until it was remastered in 2018 and presented as a possible source of studies. In this research, we seek to analyze the Jurema Sagrada as a hybrid religion, which brings together Catholic, Afro-Brazilian and Kardecist spiritism elements, born in the sertão and with indigenous roots. Our gaze turns to religion for its central role in the plot of Ribeiro Jr. With the film as the main source, we mobilized interviews with Núbia Lima (actress, costume designer and cousin of Ribeiro Jr.), Amaro Lima (makeup artist and friend of Ribeiro Jr.) and Mirabô Dantas (musician), who participated in the production and recordings of the featurefootage, and that were part of the director’s life. In this sense, we use the method of Discourse Analysis to understand the discourses used in the plot, sewing the lines, scenes and cutouts in line with the political and social era in which it was recorded. In addition, we apply the approaches advocated by Oral History to give support and depth to our oral sources and the testimonies of memories of the interviewees. We work in this research with frames, or images that we capture from within the scenes, so that we capture static images of a scene of moving images (videos). To analyze these images, we use the methodology of observing by layers, what is in the main plan and what is in the background, making comments that accompany the discussion of the images in the context of each chapter. We operationalize the concepts of representations, cultural hybridism, sertões and landscape, to give theoretical support, enabling reflection on a hybrid religion, a Jurema, represented in cinematography in the cut of a Seridó Potiguar between the 1970s and 1980s. Our objective with this research, therefore, is to think about the sertões and the religiosities and hybrid practices Sertanejas, having the cinema as a source and, above all, a cinema made by a seridoense with bases in the Brazilian Cinema Novo.

  • The historical processes in which gypsy subjects were inserted were marked by conflicts between them and the dominant culture with which they established contacts. There were different spaces and populations that rejected the presence of gypsies and their monadic practices. Modernity has imposed a way of life that deviates from the interests and customs of the gypsies, triggering various attitudes of exclusion, expulsion, violence, among others, which we can conceptualize as anti-gypsy practices. The gypsies arrived in the lands that we now know as Brazil after the exile committed by the then Portuguese crown; In this territory, they found refuge in the sertões, this space that was the stage for the unwanted for countless mobilities and cultural dynamisms, where the gypsies were also inserted. It is from this perspective that various representations regarding gypsies, the signs of modernity and the backlands were consolidated, reverberating anti-gypsy images or constructing imaginaries that refer to local particularities. Therefore, we analyzed from printed materials, especially newspapers and cordel leaflets, how this process of relationship between gypsies, the sertões and modernity in Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba and Pernambuco between the years 1950 and 1988, generated diverse representations in materials already mentioned, including representations that refer to forms of violence, based on the dissemination of negative stereotypes about these subjects.

  • This dissertation is intended as an analysis and continuation of the folklorization process of Antônio Conselheiro present in the work O Ciclo Folclórico do Bom Jesus Conselheiro by researcher José Calasans. Using the idea of a Folklore Cycle related to the chief of Arraial de Canudos, I will analyze how this process followed, through the problematization and discursive analysis of the new folklore plays, speeches and productions about the Counselor, which were produced later to the aforementioned initial study. Articulating transversal themes such as Messianism, Sebastianism, the discussion on Brazilian Folklore and starting from a Sociological and Marxist approach, I will use as sources the works O Messianismo no Brasil e no Mundo (1965) and Cangaceiros e Fanáticos (1963), respectively, by the sociologist Maria Pereira Isaura de Queiroz and the Marxist Rui Facó, produced during the 40s and 60s, about Antônio Vicente Mendes Maciel, considering the contribution of these, identified here as the new folkloric plays, to the new phases of the Cycle, emphasizing the decades covered here. In this way, this dissertation is a study of the countless faces and folklore images attributed to Antônio Conselheiro, as well as an analysis of the impact of these representations to the formation of an image-cultural profile of one of the identities that were attributed to the northeastern sertanejo people.

  • This work focuses on understanding the surroundings and dynamics of a devotion to three miracle-working siblings in the Sertão of of the Seridó region. The fundamental narrative for the emergence of this devotion is anchored in a tragedy that killed three poor siblings around 1912. Starting from the understanding and care dedicated to children who died in the Sertão and the dimension of the tragedy, the story of the Three Little Burnt Angels started receiving special attention that expanded and spanned the 20th century to contemporary times. Although we do not have defining time frames for when people began to ask for and receive graces, we know that at least four generations already visited and asked for their intercession. Analyzing the ramifications of this story, the aim is to understand how devotion and memories that stem from a tragedy that killed three children are intertwined with specific experiences in this region. This study approaches the field of non-canonical Catholicism and has the concepts of miracle worker and sublimation as fundamental to understanding what occurs in the devotion to the Little Burnt Angels. Added to this, the concept of memory is included in this discussion, supporting the investigation of the narrative surrounding miracle workers and the mechanisms that keep this devotion alive. In addition, the conception of representation contributes to a perception of the elaborations that feed from and build landscapes around devotion. And throughout the research, concepts of Sertões are used, a territory associated with the colonizing process, but that over time and interests took on new meanings. For this work, it was necessary to use Oral History, the analysis of the painting located on the side of a chapel and the photographs resulting from this investigation, besides the inventory of offerings found in the place of devotion.

  • Thinking about representations of the sertão from the perspective of female protagonism in the light of the film Pacarrete (Allan Deberton, 2019) led us to begin this search by understanding in what ways the sertão began to be transposed to the national cinema screens, starting with the Cinema Novo phase . Although the northeastern hinterland has always been present, producing cinema was part of the idealization of a modernized country that followed the new world trends. It was in the 1950s and 1960s that the crystallized images of the sertão were constructed, inspired by the regionalist novel of 1930. With the end of Cinema Novo, the theme of the sertão appears less and less in cinema to return along with the resumption in the 1960s. 1990. This time, the hinterland of drought, backwardness and colonels gives way to a playful hinterland, located somewhere between the past and the contemporary. There is no longer a single narrative. The hinterland multiplied. Thus, every time this sertão is read and said in the cinema, it appears from a new perspective. They are films that look like soap operas and television series, Road Movies, melodramas, happy and hopeless films. Narratives focused on just one character and their anguish. In contemporary times, the sertão of Cinema Novo still appears as an inspiration, but without a concern to maintain that way of representing and often in an attempt to build a narrative that surpasses the previously constructed one. In Russas, in the hinterland of Ceará, a retired ballerina dances and invites us to this party that is her hinterland of colors, lights and movement. The release of the film triggered a wave of audiovisual productions and the city of Russas-CE became the stage for different short films that, like Pacarrete, helped us to think about the female role in contemporary backwoods films.

This dissertation has as its object the sertão in Brazilian literature of the 19th century, in the work of the writer and literary critic Tristão de Alencar Araripe Júnior. Son of one of the traditional families of the North, cousin of the writer José de Alencar, Araripe Júnior was trained as a lawyer at the Recife Law School, standing out as a literary critic and, less successfully, as a writer of novels. In Ceará, he took an active part in intellectual debate alongside Capistrano de Abreu and Raimundo Antônio da Rocha Lima, in meetings at the French Academy and later at the Escola Popular. In Rio de Janeiro, alongside Sílvio Romero and José Veríssimo, he formed the critical trinity of the naturalist period in Brazil. He was a member of the Academia Brasileira de Letras, a member of the Instituto Histórico do Ceará and the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro, and of the Sociedade de Geografia do Rio de Janeiro.  Despite this, his work received limited attention in academic works, outside the literary area, especially regarding the theme of the sertão. In this sense, we seek, on the basis of two texts by the writer, O Retirante: scenas da seca de 1845 (1877) and O Reino Encantado: crônica sebastianista (1878) to understand how the author constructs in his writing an idea of the sertão. In his vast critical production, Araripe Jr. created the concept of brazilian obnubilation, a term used by the author to explain the process of adaptation of the European man to the Brazilian tropical environment and the formation of brazilianness. Our aim is to understand the ways in which the northern sertão was produced in the Brazilian literary discourse of the 19th century and in the writings of Araripe Júnior. Trying to understand the discursive practices about the backlands in the production of Araripe Júnior goes through the search of power and knowledge relations that produced these images and these enunciates, which invented the northern backlands. To this end, we establish a theoretical dialogue with Pierre Bourdieu and Michel Foucault to address the relationship of the discursive practices of the author with the production of a given vision of the sertão of the North in the Brazilian eighteenth-century literature.

  • The Sertão, or backwoods, cannot be seen only as a space. This is a very narrow and simplistic notion of what he really is. The Sertão is the human relationship, it is the community, it is a space of power practices. It is in this sense that we need to observe the practices that build this space. The drought, even with sadness and ills, also results in a modern space, that's where we find living manifestations of human expression through the writing and publication of periodicals of a political nature, full of criticism and feelings of the time. In the north Sertão of Ceará, in the small and opulent city of Sobral, we find a very acidic and lively newspaper, which lasted from 1914 to 1924. Time needed to win allies and win many enemies, too. This work aims to study the relations between the journalist Deolindo Barreto Lima, editor of the newspaper A Lucta, and Colonel Francisco de Almeida Monte, observing their deeds and the way they were described, without leaving aside the crimes and criticisms of one towards another, having the newspaper as a central source. This is an intriguing plot, full of accusations and few paths and that's where the documentary research in newspapers, available in physical or digital files, if desired, without leaving aside romantic chronicles or memoirist writings. In these readings, it is not difficult to find texts loaded with feelings and criticism, easily leading to question whether the view that one had of the other was really objective. This objectivity built a character with characteristics that only exist in the mind of the person who described it, making it necessary to deeply analyze what was said in order to understand whether or not this construction is close to something fictional, imaginative or even real.

  • The text analyzes the work of Jurema Sagrada carried out by Maria do Salgadinho (Maria Moreira da Silva, 1933-2017), between the years 1952 to 2016, in the context of Afro-Amerindian religiosities in Seridó Potiguar. The research is based on the premise that there are traces of ancient rituals in their practices that encompass black and indigenous cultures. Above all, the people generically called Tapuias (Tarairiu), who lived in the North-Rio Grande hinterland. Through gestures, rituals and the constant use of smoke, leaves and jurema drink, I believe in the approximation of its rituals with the cult of indigenous ancestors. Question: To what extent does Maria do Salgadinho's Sacred Jurema incorporate elements of ancestral jure practices? To guide the discussions, I rely on theorists such as Ronaldo Vainfas (1995), who contributes to reviewing the effects of the European presence in 16th-century America; Darcy Ribeiro (1995), who addresses the formation of the “Brazilian” people; Cristina Pompa (2001), dealing with indigenous diversity and the use of “religion as translation”; in addition to Mircea Eliade (2010), Sandro Guimarães Salles (2010), Luiz Assunção (2010) among other scholars who deal with the problem in question. Thus, I understand that the approximation between academia and micro-histories is relevant, enabling narratives such as that of the sertaneja religious Maria do Salgadinho, as these move other centralities and promote, through tensions, negotiations and accommodations, significant changes in space and in people's lives. who allow themselves to experience profound experiences in any sphere, including the spiritual one. This was the case of this woman, mestizo, of rural origin, who participated in the history of her place through her religiosity, forged in the wilds of the Sertão.

  • In the present dissertation, we seek to analyze the political insertion of magistrates in the sertões of the north-rio-grandense Seridó, between 1858 and 1907, whose forms of action we investigate through a prosopographic study, from hemerographic and judicial sources, as well as the legislation on the Judiciary and on elections, in addition to the reports of the presidents of provinces/states and the Minister of Justice. Dialoguing with concepts such as political history, elites, clientelism and sociability networks, we seek to understand the dynamics of occupation of magistrate positions and their use for political purposes, analyzing how an idea of the sertão as a lawless, depopulated, uncivilized, influenced the choices of magistrates to act in the hinterland districts. Using a micro historical perspective, we take as a paradigm Dr. Manoel José Fernandes, a magistrate from Serido who, for more than forty years (1861-1907), was inserted in the political life of Serido, as head of the Liberal Party, during the monarchy, and, proclaimed the Republic, of the Republican Party, whose professional and political trajectories we reconstruct, confronting them with those judges who acted in the sertões of Seridó and seeking to demonstrate the importance of the family group and the networks of cronyism for the local political elites to maintain their prestige and social status. Methodologically, we start with a bibliographical review, still using the evidence paradigm, and adopting micro-history and nominative linking as approaches in the management of sources.

  • This dissertation has as its object the memories that Dinarte de Medeiros Mariz projected of himself throughout his public life, however, we are within a time frame from his death on July 9, 1980 in four, after spent two months hospitalized at the Hospital de Base in Brasília, DF, suffering from an intestinal hemorrhage. Dinarte Mariz was an outstanding politician in Rio Grande do Norte and Brazil and had a career ranging from mayor of Caicó, governor of Rio Grande do Norte to senator of the Federative Republic of Brazil. At the time of his death, a significant number of admirers and onlookers took to the streets of Natal and Caicó, which the newspaper Diário de Natal classified as a large crowd. The senator's body arrived in Rio Grande do Norte on a Brazilian Air Force – FAB – plane, where he received honors as head of state at the then RN Government Palace. After the final funeral in the capital, a FAB squadron brought the former mayor of Caicó together with family members and political allies for the last goodbye in the City of Caicó where he was buried. The referred politician in a masterful way led the construction of his memory, so that it becomes a great danger for a work about him to be trapped in the constructed memories. Therefore, this research seeks to interweave information about the memories of Dinarte Mariz who transited between the many events of Brazilian politics and, according to journalistic sources, was a tireless defender of dictatorial governments. However, there is a historical fact documented by the Diário de Natal newspaper that covered the dead senator's death, wake and seventh-day mass, which forms an important narrative of Dinarte Mariz's memory that was explored in this research.

  • In this dissertation we examine nature as a subject of history and man as a geological agente acting in the natural environment. From a historical and spatial point of view, the nature that we analyzed is located in the region of Seridó potiguar, called sertão do Seridó, in the interior of Rio Grande do Norte. In this work, we intertwine the studies of the sertanist Oswaldo Lamartine de Faria on the Seridó region, bringing a reinterpretation of Serido's history and ethnography through the “nature and man” bias, approaching the concepts of environmental history, sertão and modernity. In this way, such concepts were investigated as characterizers and builders of the sertanejo space, configuring, thus, the praise of the original Brazilian biome (the caatinga) and the construction of a certain sertanejo identity from an idea of nature. From the examination of this relationship between humanity and a certain natural environment, we seek to demonstrate some of its consequences, in addition to pointing out solutions for the development of the region in question, making, therefore, a new approach to the texture of writing about the northeastern sertões.

  • This research focuses on the work of Oswaldo Lamartine de Faria (1919 – 2007), a renowned writer in the literate universe of Rio Grande do Norte, who between 1945 and 2005 dedicated himself to the study and writing about the rural world, especially the sertão do Seridó, building a work of varied textual genres and with significant autobiographical marks. The analysis of the discourse that operates in his essays and in the self writing, mainly in his interviews and published correspondence, allowed to undertake the examination of a certain conception about the sertão do Seridó built by him throughout the 20th century, privileging the ways in which in the text their experience with the time and space they put into practice are manifested. Thus, in the first chapter, we approach the existential assumptions that structure the historical knowledge effectively used by the sertanist in his reading of the sertão (RICOEUR, 2007). In the second chapter we dedicate ourselves to the analysis of the research and writing procedures that make up the ethnography put into practice by the author (CERTEAU, 1998). Finally, we consider that the sertanista makes deliberate use of the past to, in an excusive way, invest in the consolidation of a memory about a political domination over the sertão of Seridó.

  • This research has a purpose to problematize the representations of Assú/RN from the intellectual production of the journalist Celso Dantas da Silveira (1929-2005). We propose to analyze how he sought to appropriate the representations to safeguard them and then build as heir to backwoods of poetry. We emphasize that we do not seek to investigate how representations of Assú were constructed, given that Celso da Silveira's writing has a character of preservation. So, we seek to research how Celso da Silveira appropriated representations from Terra dos Poetas, Terra dos Verdes Carnaubais and Atenas Norte-Rio-Grandense, putting into circulation new and old representations about the city and about himself, the last one material, emerges as he tries to make the city the basis that legitimizes his intellectual actions. Our sources were books written by Celso da Silveira, and the analysis was based on Roger Chartier's Conceptual Scheme (2002), Representation, Appropriation, Practice and Circulation. To answer our questions, we dialogue with the Backwoods History, Cultural History, and Intellectual History

The main sources of this research were the works Cartas dos Sertões do Seridó (2000), Outras Cartas dos Sertões do Seridó (2004), Novas Cartas dos Sertões do Seridó (2009), Cartas dos Sertões do Seridó – 4th Book (2013) and Últimas Cartas dos Sertões do Seridó (2018). The material used in this study were not ordinary letters of a personal nature, but letters that were sent with the purpose of publishing and disseminating their content, for that reason we will call them as chronicle-letters, based in Silva (2012). These productions were sent by Bezerra to the journalist Woden Madruga, who published them in his column in the newspaper Tribuna do Norte, over the years and with a large volume of chronicle-letters produced, these were gradually published in books. The analysis of the sources was made through the concepts of representation, appropriation and circulation, according to Roger Chartier (2002), which allows us to present the representations created and/or reformulated by Bezerra. The sertões as a category produced to delimit a physical, social and cultural space were thought through authors such as Janaína Amado (1995) in dialogue with other writers who wrote about the Brazilian Sertões, but highlighting the sertão constructed and narrated by Paulo Bezerra.

To face adversities, the State implemented a set of actions considered modern and that were supported by the discourse of engineers and technicians, which can be characterized as an authoritarian modernization.  This work is about the analysis of the political, technical and journalistic discourses between 1975 and 1985 that defended modernity for the Valley through the Baixo-Açu Project. The study allowed us to understand how the agents of power acted in defense of the project and how the idea of modernity was used to strengthen the concept of progress and salvation. The displacement of the city of São Rafael, as well as its new urban structure was also analyzed based on the discourses that praised the idea of modernizing the sertão. The research also recovered the considerations about the social manifestations during the implementation of the construction and verified political persecution to union, ecclesiastic and teaching leaders. This study makes use of the periodical O Diário de Natal (1975 - 1979); materials issued by the Federal Police Department - Regional Superintendence of Rio Grande do Norte; the Ministry of Aeronautics; the National Information Service; the DNOCS report and advertising pamphlet, as well as correspondence to Bishop Dom Heitor and speeches by the politician Moacyr Duarte. The narrative is based on the concepts: sertão, modernity, modernization and discourse.

  • This dissertation analyzes the implementation of the programs Alliance for Progress, Food for Peace and the Work Fronts in Seridó Potiguar between 1961 and 1978. of climatic calamities, droughts or floods and were decisive for the assistance to the countrysides. At the same time that the social impacts of the calamities diminished, these programs served to fix these countrysides in their places of origin, preventing, to some extent, large migrations. The work goes through an analysis with a political - social historiographical focus and the concepts of sertão, political history and poverty. This research was carried out on the website of Hemeroteca Digital, where the newspapers were found: Diário de Natal, Diário de Pernambuco, Correio Braziliense and O Poti, which allowed us to perceive how the press reported the implementation of programs, but also how it referred to moments disasters, whether droughts or floods. Research was carried out in the archives of the Diocese of the city of Caicó, where through letters, reports and receipts, he clarified and brought us new facts regarding the various programs implemented in the region of Seridó Potiguar. In the same way, the 1st Battalion of Engineering and Construction of Caicó, presented us with official reports that allowed us to deepen the studies on the works managed by the institution, originating several Work Fronts. Throughout the period studied, we sought to clarify how these relationships and structures established in the name of drought and established poverty were primary activities for a crowd that offered labor in exchange for payment and food passed on through agreements signed between governments. of Rio Grande do Norte and the government of the United States of America.

  • This work studies non-white women (“índias”, “africanas”, “pretas”, “negras”, “mamalucas”, “cabras”, “crioulas”, “mulatas”, “mestiças” and “pardas”) in the Seridó, the backlands of the Capitania do Rio Grande, and analyzes the representations made about these women in the historical documentation of the 18th and 19th centuries. It mobilizes the concepts of quality and condition, and the investigation is developed in parish document sources (baptisms, marriages and deaths registries), judicial sources (post-mortem inventories, manumission letters and freedom actions) and sesmarias. It starts through the quantitative and qualitative cross-referencing of documentation, supported by the methodological instruments of the evidential paradigm and the onomastic method, in dialogue with a micro-historical approach. Through the reconstruction of trajectories of non-white women, it understands in an intersectional way their social and economic dynamics and strategies, such as work, formation of families and judicial proceedings for freedom, looking for social ascension. It observes their representations in historical records during the processes of social mobility and also investigates their properties and horizontal and vertical alliances established in their contact networks, sometimes reinforced by theestablishment of spiritual kinship, through godparenting. By dealing with a theme still little addressed in the historiography about the backlands of Seridó, this work reaches the trajectories and places occupied by non-white women in the symbolic and material world in the Seridó between the18th and 19th centuries.

  • This paper aims to comprehend instituted speeches by contemporary cinematographic images, about hinterland and the prevailing gender issues, mainly, countryside masculinity construction setting in a breaking and continuity way, with regard to moral codes which shape this reality. To achieve this, we get started from a timeline between the years 2000 to 2015, which had as a landmark of some regional film productions with hinterland themes, such Cinema, aspirins and vultures (2005), Luneta do tempo (2014), and soap operas genre, with The Enchanted Tale (2011) production. In addition to these, we also worked here with Boi Neon - Neon Bull movie (2015) directed by Gabriel Mascaro, which was one of the the basic source of this writing. The theoretical and methodological framework is structured on Michel Foucault's discourse analysis, aiming to understand the various layers of meanings that constitute, mainly cinematographic images, actually for the study that we propose to carry out here. This analysis also started from the use of the archaeological method of images, that is, an excavation of the visual layers that constitute our way of seeing the hinterland, based on the suppositions presented by the art historian Georges Didi - Huberman. The theoretical discussion is also based on Queer Theory to understand the new gender relations that are brings in the filmic narrative of Boi Neon - Neon Bull, from the conceptions of Judith Butler (2021) and the reflections of Richard Miskolci (2021) and Guacira Lopes (2018) by all means when they think about gender as a normative construction in culture and the possibility of experiencing another diversity, other ways of exercising masculinity in a different way. plural, beyond the norms. In this sense, based on Didi-Huberman's concept of image survivor or symptom image, we conclude that the images of the hinterlands that preceded the production of Boi Neon are surviving images of other previous visual productions (such as the films of Cinema Novo and Retomada) and that the images captured by Boi Neon are action-images, which, in turn, are critical images, transgressors of a given visuality of the hinterlands and of the time of these images. In this matter, the images around the male and female body here, spatiality are, in a way, deconstructed and different from the elaborations already made around the countryside person, just as it is hinterland/wild from the film's perspective. Therefore, the contemporary hinterland of Boi Neon is a movement of temporal passages - the archaic and the new, of the past and the present, of bodies in "dilatation" and, finally, a hinterland in transit.

  • It investigates representations about non-white individuals in Totoró and its surroundings, a space located in Ribeira do Acauã, during the 18th and 19th centuries. Methodologically, it starts with a historiographical review, transcription and reading of post-mortem inventories, sesmarial sources and manumission letters with baptism, marriage and death records related to the sertão do Seridó. Believe that the constitution and experiences in Totoró did not involve only lusitanian or luso-brazilian subjects, as well as, it was not restricted only to the family nucleus of Lopes Galvão, but there was also the presence and participation of people and families formed by indians, blacks, gentiles from Mina, Costa, Angola, creoles, goats, mulattoes, pardos and mestizos in the conditions of free, captive or free. Operating the concepts of dynamics of miscegenation and quality, dialoguing with the assumptions of Quantitative and Serious History and Micro-History, seek to understand how these individuals participated and were inserted in the social, economic, political and religious dynamics of their time and space. For this, we reconstruct family arrangements that were constituted in captivity and track specific trajectories of non-white people located in this territoriality: Miguel Figueira Galvão, José Lopes Galvão and Paula Barbalha de Vasconcelos, and Diogo de Melo and Paula Maria da Conceição; aiming perceive tactics, strategies and forms of resistance that circumvent the limits that colonial society tried to impose.

  • The present comprises a series of information mainly focused on the use of new technologies, cell phones, computers, social networks, applications for dissemination, purchase and sale of products, streaming movies, series and music, digital readers and several other tools. Faced with this process of updating, with its polysemic and multifaceted character, the sertões continue to be presented from the perspective of “classical” discourses, mostly synonymous with the Brazilian Northeast region as well as descriptions of sertanejos and northeastern subjects. The constant updating in which the world finds itself does not seem to be adequate to overcome the symmetry between these categories. In this sense, the objective is to carry out a study on the (re)presentations of the sertões in digital media, starting with informative sites, with great reach and visibility, capable of disseminating negative or positive images about the category. As well as the use of social networks, with emphasis on Instagram and a page called Raízes do Sertão and the Blog of Pernambuco photographer Fred Jordão. The investigation seeks to understand, in dialogue with digital history, the images/landscapes of the sertões available in digital media. It is concluded that the contemporaneity of the sertões applies only to its dissemination in digital media as a place with arid characteristics, of "austere" men due to the hostile environment and, at the same time, reinforce a romanticized and telluric vision without facing the historically constructed problems that end up naturalizing such visions.

  • We investigate how the political trajectory of the sertanejo politician José Bernardo de Medeiros was appropriated in order to generate representations about him, setting a prominent place for himself in the political history of Rio Grande do Norte and legitimizing the political groups that considered themselves his heirs. For that, we take as reference the studies on the relationship between memory and history promoted by the philosopher Paul Ricoeur and the historians Enzo Traverso and Fernando Catroga. In addition, we take as a basis the Cultural History conceived by Roger Chartier, from the conceptual scheme of representation, appropriation and circulation, as it allows us to launch reflections on how his political performance was appropriated.

  • This dissertation presents the results of an investigation about the connection between the trajectory of Dinarte de Medeiros Mariz and his relationship with the sertão of the Seridó of Rio Grande do Norte, namely his performance with the official policy of “combating” the drought, considering his participation in SUDENE. The objective of the research was to problematize how, as a subject who was forging for himself a political character that represented the sertanejo, he articulated himself with the national policy concerning droughts, appropriating himself as the representative of Rio Grande do Norte. To answer the questions, we approached a specialized bibliography that deals with themes such as sertão, droughts, political trajectories and the history of official bodies for the development of the national policy of combat/containment/control and coexistence with droughts. Based on the reading of authors/es, we reflect on Mariz's political trajectory, on the official policies enshrined in bodies such as IOCS/DNOCS/SUDENE and how, among personal, institutional and official efforts, the drought emerged as "the problem of the Northeast", and later in the Northeast of Brazil, while other reasons of a human nature, and therefore historical, that justified the social problems faced in the region, especially in periods of drought, were masked. In this way, we take as a time frame the years 1954 - 1959, which comprise important periods, with regard to political issues, drought, creation of institutions and the social problems faced in the aforementioned space. From the point of view of the field in which this work is located, we identify it in a zone of confluence and correlation between Political History, Cultural History and Social History from which some concepts become relevant to the understanding of the object, such as: discourse, representation, politics, sertão and modernity. Thus, from the point of view of the sources used in the research, we highlight the Minutes of the Deliberative Council of the Superintendence for the Development of the Northeast - CODENO and of the Superintendence for the Development of the Northeast - SUDENE, and the publications of the newspapers Diário de Natal, O Poti, Diário de Pernambuco and the newspaper O Commercio.

Part of historiographical review, transcription and reading of documents from the 19th century. XVII, XVIII and XIX, archaeological sources and sesmarias and baptism, marriage and death records. We believe that in the context of interethnic interactions with the invaders, Xukuru who survived the “War of the Barbarians” and remained or returned to this region handled poetry, their own and those of the invaders, as a strategy of resistance and social prominence, even with descendants having become precursors of the School of Poetry of Teixeira and of the School of Poetry of São José do Egito”.

  • The study analyzes the folkloric production of Ademar Vidal, from Paraíba, and focuses, especially, on his writings from the 1940s and 1950s to problematize his elaboration of the sertão and sertanejo categories. As a starting point, it discusses his intellectual performance linked to institutions dedicated to cultural and literary studies on the identity of Paraíba, such as the Sociedade Paraibana de Folclore (SPF) and the Instituto Histórico Geográfico Paraibano (IHGP), in the 1940s. These insertions were important in the formulation of a discourse on characterizations of the people and the sertanejo space, listed in his work as elements that compose a Paraíba identity, based on three spatialities: coast, marsh or lowland, and sertão. The time frame is justified by the fact that it is the period of greatest circulation of his writing and the cultural research carried out through collaborators from the sertanejos of Paraíba, which were used as sources in the production of his work. In this sense, to map the studies carried out on the sertão and sertanejo of Paraíba, the documentary typology was the productions of his authorship, the unpublished available at IHGP, the bibliography and the correspondence sent to Luís da Câmara Cascudo, made available at the Instituto Câmara Cascudo (Ludovicus). In theoretical-methodological terms, a dialogue was made with the sertão category from Souza (2015), the history of historiography with Certeau (1982), and the concept of intellectual from Gomes and Hansen (2016).

  • The dissertation presented consists of analyzing the process of civilizing the man of the Sertão do Seridó through the educational work developed by MEB/Sistema Caicó and by the Emissora de Educação Rural de Caicó. With this, we investigated, through the traces left by the MEB documentation, the development of the educational work narrated by the reports, radio programs schedules, by the studies of areas presented by the documentation during the decades from 1963 to 1974, as well as perceiving the actions of the MEB Caicó System in the fight against illiteracy and the applicability of this educational process for the development of the country in agreement with the Federal Government. The analysis will be guided by the concepts of Civility by Nobert Elias (1994) and Conscientização by Paulo Freire (2001). Such references allowed walking through the understanding of the educational process of the MEB in the sertões of the Seridó reported in its documentation of how the sertanejo should behave in the face of issues related to their health, education, politics, economics and evangelization. The methodology used is qualitative as well as discourse analysis, which will be carried out through readings of newspapers, ichnographic material, letters, official documents of the MEB / Caicó System, its teaching material, reports, schedule of the subjects addressed by the speaker teachers. produced by the MEB, available at the LABORDOC of CERES Caicó, another part of the material under the custody of the Diocesan College of Caicó (CDS), as well as by Cáritas Diocesana de Caicó.

  • The theme that covers this work is the viola singing in the sertão do Seridó potiguar, since it analyzes its presence in this territory, focusing on the city of Caicó-RN, delimiting its changes and continuities over time. Theoretical debates are based on concepts of Oral History, Cultural History and Popular Culture, as well as dialogues and analyzes based on the concepts of genealogy, history writing and sertões. The sources used are oral, literary sources, hemerographic sources, folkloric books and academic texts, as well as various documents present in the personal collections of poets in the municipality of Caicó. At the end of the research, it can be seen that: viola singing has been active in Seridó since the second quarter of the 19th century; writing about singing changes, as do the statements about singers; and there were changes and continuities based on technological demands, as well as on the readings that cantadores do about the sertões.

  • In the middle of the dry land of the Sertão do Seridó, among the twisted branches of the caatinga, a peculiar form of devotion emerges. More precisely in the rural area of the municipality of Jucurutu, Rio Grande do Norte. Which is presented here as the object of analysis of this work. This devotion fits into the unofficial cults of Catholicism, since it is not intended for official saints, but for a subject who belonged to the studied community and who, when he died tragically, came to be understood and worshiped as a miracle worker. In this sense, we try to understand the process through which the miracle worker goes through, the status of sacred place that the place of his death receives, all this related to the debate about sertões and a possible so-called sertaneja religiosity. We will see through the oral sources the story of José Batista Serafim - Zé Menino, his death and sublimation, we will discuss the concepts of sertões, religiosities and unofficial devotions, around the miracle worker and his place of worship.

  • Self-appointed of “Romeiros do porvir” some young guys founded in 1900, in the city of Crato, a literary association. Around the Club Romeiros do Porvir, these intellectuals endeavored, in addition to artistic purposes, to build and circulate representations of progress, of intellectuality and the Sertões (like the “other”, seen from Cariri). Thus, we are concerned, in this dissertation, with understanding how the members of this group built and circulated such representations. For this, we investigated the intellectual trajectory of some members of the association, as well as, cultural conditions and practices emerging at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century; we seek to understand how the intellectual and cultural performance of the members of the group contributed to the construction and circulation of representations around themselves and the spaces in which they were inserted; and, finally, we analyze the ways in which the “Romeiros do porvir” built and circulated representations around the sertões. The theoretical dialogues occurred, mainly, in the field of Cultural History from the studies of Roger Chartier (1990, 2002) and from the concepts of cultural practice, representation and circulation, worked by the same author. In order to understand the performance and organization of intellectuals, studied by us, the concepts of intellectual, networks of sociability and generation, worked by Jean-François Sirinelli (1996); and, those of trajectory, field, habitus and the circle of mutual praise, present in the studies of Pierre Bourdieu (2002), were important tools in the elaboration of this work. Sources such as the newspapers A Liça and Cidade do Crato, literary texts, memoirs and minutes of the administrative meetings of the association were used.

  • This dissertation aims to investigate the uses of the notion of sertão in the texts published in the Revista do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico do Rio Grande do Norte, between 1934 and 1972. It discusses the writings of men such as Eloy Castriciano de Souza, Nestor dos Santos Lima, José Augusto Bezerra de Medeiros and Luís da Câmara Cascudo, in order to see different conceptions, contexts and thus the uses of the notion. In this time frame, 27 volumes of the Journal are considered for analysis, in addition to works that the partners have published individually outside the Institute. Using the qualitative-quantitative examination, Michel Foucault’s contributions to the analysis of discourse are accepted, highlighting the will to truth, the power games, different articulations regarding the historiography in question. The research proposal is divided into two moments. First, the theoretical approach of the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu is taken as a support to examine, in the historiography produced by the literati, the theatralization of the power manifested in the publications, in order to examine political and intellectual interests. Celebrations, necrologies, tributes, minutes of the writing of the magazine, answers to other men of letters and biographies fit this framework of sources, directed to the search of power games. This phase is characterized by questioning the exchange of praise that occurs in a significant portion of the sources. In the second moment, arguments and questions are presented regarding the uses of the notion of sertão performed by the potiguar guild. This operation is an attempt to problematize the representations, different facets, besides the political and social aspects inculcated to the sertões by the network of sociability formed by the Institute.
In this course, there is the dialogue with the perspective of psychoanalysis, by pointing out, in the sources, elements of the sertão seen as a problem for the professionals of politics. The debate is marked by the discussion of faith in progress, which is parallel to the representations of the sertões in this selected context. Thus, the dissertation calls into question the political and intellectual dimensions of the Potiguar Institute, understanding that the representations of the sertões are guided by the intentions of the one who writes. The argument elaborated in this work is that the representations of the sertão are used, above all, in the construction of a political history, particular and elitist, on the part of the partners.

  • This dissertation deals with the sewing of meanings on the sertões in the discursive space of Brazilian fashion, from the launch of two clothing collections signed by Brazilian designers and paraded in national fashion events. In this direction, we have chosen as objects of study the fashion collections “Carne Seca ou Um Turista Aprendiz em Terra Áspera”, by stylist from Minas Gerais, Ronaldo Fraga, launched at São Paulo Fashion Week, in 2013; and “Vaqueiro Desconstruído pela Alfaiataria”, by São Paulo stylist Akihito Hira, winning collection of the Ceará Moda Contemporânea contest, in 2017. In the course of this investigation, we seek to analyze the dialogue of Brazilian designers with the concept of sertão, their inscription in the discursive space of fashion, its association with the language of the clothes, observing the signs that were arranged by the stylists to take the sertões to the catwalks and discuss the imagery and discursive (re)constructions operated from those events, with attention to the continuities and ruptures of meaning about the idea of sertão. We conceive, in this way, that the presence of the concept of sertão in the discursive space of Brazilian fashion implies its (re)creation, that is, the darning of new statements, new ways of seeing and saying them, since fashion, first of all, it is linked to what is contemporary.

  • It questions the aesthetics and the way in which two comic book publishers from Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, represented the northeastern sertão, the sertanejo subject and their cultural practices. The study covered twelve (12) journals, in which representations about sertão were found in twenty (20) narratives. In this universe, ten (10) are present in seven (07) issues of the magazine Maturi, from the Research Group on Comic History (Grupehq), in Natal; and ten (10) in five (05) publications of the Pau a Pique Group of Comics (Grupphq), current Avoante Cultural Association (AAC) of the interior city of Currais Novos: Cowboys Stories, Chaos in Tetas, Kueka, Comics Avoante nº 01 and Kankão nº 01. From this collection, it was selected one (01) comic from each group to obtain data. We used a methodological approach of semiotic analysis from Umberto Eco to decode the graphic signs as pointed out by Antônio Cagnin. It was applied Wally Wood's “twenty-two panels that always work” scheme to identify frames of scenes. We used categories to define each type of transition between the paintings elaborated by Scott McCloud. To recognize the sertanejos signs, we based on Janaína Amado, Erivaldo Neves, Durval Albuquerque Júnior and Antônio Araújo Sá. After using the methodological diagram, we found two production aesthetics and two representations about the sertão. One on the coast, covered by stereotypes such as poverty, misery, disease and rusticity, linked to the idea of barbarism and violence; another from the interior, and among the characteristics, the representation of fun, humor, as well as, social and economic perspective, even if it still accompanies stereotypes.

  • This text analyses the Propaganda Against Illiteracy Plan, created in 1928 by Mayor Florêncio Luciano, in Parelhas, Rio Grande do Norte state. Due to our purposes, we chose a short period from 1928 to 1930 as it was seen as the first process of education expansion in Parelhas municipality. We also pay attention to its linking with both state and national campaigns against illiteracy. On this way, the work presents some specific purposes, such as: the plan to eradicate illiteracy, the censuses carried out in the city and in the rural communities, the assembly of an educational cartography aligned to the national and of local insertion, and the arrival of some signs of modernization through an educational perspective for Parelhas.  In terms of methodology, it is first based on a mapping of specific files such as laws and ordinances that governed local education, determining the censuses in urban and rural locations, followed by its critical analysis. As a result of this research, it is possible to perceive as Parelhas, a small place in the Sertão do Seridó region, was enunciated as a contemporary space and attentive to the educational changes wich were taking place in the country.

  • Our research, entiled O sertão sabugiense bathed by airs of modernity: the sabugi reservoir (1958 -1965), has as problematic to understand how the sabugiense population received the construction of the sabugi reservoir, how this work was meant by the local population so for this analysis, we worked with the time frame from 1958 (the year in which the construction oh the Weir was requested) to 1965 (the year the Weir was inaugurated). To answer this question, we will use a very heterogeneous documental collection, covering diferent types: textual (letters, land assessments, newspapers, proxies, price tables for expropriation); iconographic (06 photographs related to the construction of the reservoir) and audiovisual (video of the inauguration of the Sabugi reservoir). In addition to these, we will use oral sources. About the methodology and study of these sources, we catalog the sources, classifying them by themes and typologies; we cross the data found in the diferent sources; we produce tables and think about the historicity and production of the newspapers used in the research.

  • The present work aims to analyze the participation of potiguares sertanejos as rubber soldiers, during the Second World War, as well as to understand the events that marked the early years of the 1940s and their reverberations in the backlands of Rio Grande do Sul: the project for the occupation of the Valley Amazon, the drought of 1942 and the war effort in the context of World War II. Thus, the sertanejos of Rio Grande do Norte appear, in this work, as central actors who found themselves inserted in all these events through national and international political actions. As it brings the potiguares and amazonian hinterlands as a spatial cut, the work has the bibliographical contribution of authors who discuss the concept of hinterland, to show how these spaces were interpreted until the 1940s, when they became the center of attention due to events already listed. As a time frame, the research was inserted between 1942 and 1946, as it addressed the entry of Brazil in the world conflict and the beginning of the rubber campaign, in addition to discussing the situation in which many Northeastern workers were post-war. For its composition, the work relied on the use of hemerographic sources, bibliographic material and official documents, which allowed us to conclude that the rubber campaign had not only the North American incentive, but the propaganda of the Brazilian government itself, which had pretensions to mobilize a large contingent of northeastern workers for the North region of the country, with the purpose of promoting the occupation and economic development of the Amazon Valley. The analysis of the material used also allowed to conclude that part of these workers experienced a situation of abandonment by the Brazilian government, a fact that ended up triggering the Rubber Commission of Inquiry.

  • This work aims to discuss the backlands as spaces for the construction of messianic movements in Brazil, taking as its object the Messianic Movement of Serra de João do Vale, led by Blessed Joaquim Ramalho in the late nineteenth century in Vila do Triunpho, Estado do Large northern river. The issue arose from a scarce historiographical production on the movement at a regional and national level. Initially, they were evidenced in the writings of Luís da Câmara Cascudo in an article published in the Revista do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico do Rio Grande do Norte (IHGRN) and in the newspaper do Commercio do Rio de Janeiro in 1941. For a better analysis, we look into works such as “The messianism in Brazil and in the world” by sociologist Maria Isaura Pereira de Queiroz and “Readings of "religious fanaticism" in the Brazilian hinterland" by Cristina Pompa. We adopted the approach of Discourse History and Oral History, from authors such as Eni Orlandi and Verena Alberti for the analysis of the sources, namely: articles in newspapers and magazines, private archives, drawings created from oral reports of Serra residents by João do Vale, books and interviews. At the end of this work, the speeches that constituted and named the Messianic Movement of Serra de João do Vale will be verified.

  • Located in the current territory of the municipality of Caicó/RN, the site Culumins is both the name of the place and the object of study linked to the context of the settlement of the capitania of Rio Grande, consolidated at the end of the seventeenth century and that had in the implantation of the farm structures a privileged locus. This space, based on the interaction between individuals with landscapes and material culture, is analyzed with a view to understanding the aspects related to the economy and the rural society in the colonial Seridó, since the end of the eighteenth century and throughout the nineteenth century. Therefore, from the objects and the space where they are inserted, use reading and interpretation of bibliographic references, in addition to the use of archaeological methodologies of field and laboratory research, to address consumer-related social and cultural practices. However, it is noteworthy that the idea of consumption is not restricted to thinking only marketing, but it also integrates the way in which these objects were used and produced by the individuals who lived there and how this can be inserted into other spheres of social relations. This perspective is a way of understanding the material dimension present in the living spaces of the sertão of Seridó, also reflecting the notion of a materiality that integrates the northeastern backlands during the colonial period.

  • It proposes a study on the territorialization process of the Physiographic Zones – Rio Seridó Zone and Rio Assú Zone, based on the work Municipalities of Rio Grande do Norte, authored by Nestor dos Santos Lima. In this sense, we consider the territorialization of these zones as a process of changes in the administrative and ecclesiastical sphere as an agent of change in the process of occupation of these hinterlands. The process of territorialization of these spaces is considered from the work, as the characteristics of the sertões and their singularities are portrayed. The Seridó River Zone is characterized by the documental sources researched by the author, as well as by the use of memories as a historical source. Based on Michel de Certeau (2002), we seek to analyze the historical context of the creation of the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute (IHGB) of the Historical and Geographical Institute of Rio Grande do Norte (IHGRN), to understand the intellectual trajectory of the author Nestor Lima and consequently the ideological bases that resulted in his main work on the cities of Rio Grande do Norte. The Rio Assú Zone is portrayed based on the cities that make up the region in order to highlight the fauna, flora and the process of historical change. Methodologically, it starts from the reading and bibliographical review, selection and composition of a picture of the cities and their respective zones, as well as the qualitative analysis of the work, for the understanding of the historical process established by the author, Nestor Lima. It was concluded that the author's writing process resulted from his institutional place as an agent of the state government and that the sertões of Seridó and Assú were described in the historiography in order to highlight the process of territorial changes and that memory appears in the work search source.
