The Medicine Program of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), located in Natal/RN, is a full-time, in-person program that began in 1955 and has been recognized for its relevance in medical training in Rio Grande do Norte and the Brazilian Northeast region. Integrated into a public university committed to teaching, research, outreach, and innovation, the program has established itself as a regional benchmark for the quality of its education and its contribution to strengthening medical education and the health system.
Its educational proposal aims to train physicians with a generalist, humanistic, critical, reflective, and ethical profile, prepared to work at different levels of health care, with social responsibility and a commitment to human dignity, citizenship, and comprehensive health. In line with the National Curriculum Guidelines and the principles of the Unified Health System (SUS), the program combines a solid scientific base, technical qualification, and the development of ethical, communicational, and relational skills.
The curriculum emphasizes the integration between basic and clinical training, interdisciplinarity, involvement in community activities, practical activities, and progressive engagement with real-world care settings. The educational path includes extension activities, scientific development, and a mandatory on-the-job training internship in the final two years.
The program has a multi-center academic structure, with activities developed in UFRN units and in different care and teaching settings, including three university hospitals, public health services, and partner institutions. It also has skills laboratories and clinical simulation practices, which contribute to the technical, ethical, and humanistic development of students.
The commitment to quality is reaffirmed by the inseparability of teaching, research, and extension, by inclusion and student support actions, and by the program's recognition, evidenced by external evaluations conducted by the Ministry of Education.
