The History program, both in the Licentiate Degree and Bachelor’s Degree modalities, is linked to the Department of History (DEHIS) of the Center for Humanities, Letters and Arts (CCHLA) of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), located on the Central Campus. In addition to the programs, the department is responsible for administering the Undergraduate Program in History (Distance Learning Modality), the Archaeology, Image, Book and Document Restoration, and Social History Experimentation Laboratories, as well as the PNLD Memorial. Furthermore, the department also houses the Academic Graduate Program in History (PPGH) and the Professional Graduate Program in History Teaching (PROFHistória).

The Department of History has a staff composed of 21 professors, 3 adjunct professors, 1 visiting professor, and 7 technical-administrative employees. According to UFRN’s 2002 Charter, the department's plenary panel is the deliberative body responsible for policies, strategies, and administrative, academic, didactic-scientific, and pedagogical routines, while the department head is the executive body for these activities.

The History program was legally recognized by Federal Decree No. 46,868, of September 16, 1959. Subsequently, the Bachelor's degree modality was established by Resolution 62/77 of June 3, 1977. Over the years, the program has undergone curricular reforms and significant changes. Currently, the History program has a total of 560 students, according to data collected in 2023 in SIGAA (Integrated System for the Management of Academic Activities).

The Licentiate degree program in History has 450 students, while the Bachelor's degree program has 110 students. Each program has its own coordinators and vice-coordinators. The program coordination is the executive body of the program's collegiate body, whose composition and responsibilities are established in the General Regulations and in Resolutions of UFRN’s Higher Councils.

The main path for admission into the History program is through the Unified Selection System (SISU), with an annual offering of places. The Licentiate degree offers 88 places, 34 for the morning shift and 54 for the night shift. The Bachelor's degree in History also has annual admission and offers 22 places for the morning shift. In addition, a selection process for remaining places takes place every semester, making available 10% of the number of places offered by SISU. These places are intended for students who wish to change their undergraduate program or pursue a second undergraduate program, and the process is organized by the Permanent Committee for Entrance Examinations (COMPERVE). The History program also has partnerships with other universities and other forms of admission determined by law.

The History programs, both Licentiate and Bachelor's degrees, have an average duration of four and a half years (nine semesters), but can be completed in up to seven years (fourteen semesters). This predominant workload of 3,225 hours is distributed throughout the study period. Classes take place in one of two periods: from 7:00 AM to 12:30 PM and from 6:45 PM to 10:15 PM.

It is important to highlight that both History programs received a grade of four on a scale of 1 to 5 in the National Assessment of Student Achievement (ENADE), which has been applied since 2004. This evaluation occurs every three years, with the last one held in 2021. ENADE is a quality indicator that evaluates programs  based on student achievement.

The History program is composed of two important spheres: the Program Collegiate Body, responsible for proposing resolutions, and the Structuring Teaching Core, which has the function of proposing directions. The departmental plenary panel is responsible for reviewing and making decisions related to the program. These instances are fundamental for the organization and development of academic activities in the department.
